Write for us

We welcome original pitches about the visual culture, customs, objects, language and places surrounding sport. A strong proposal has a distinct subject and explains why a reader would enjoy looking at it more closely.

What makes a good pitch

Send a working title, a short description of the central idea and a note about the details or examples the piece would explore. We are interested in focused essays and explanatory features that offer context without relying on unsupported claims, predictions or professional advice.

Originality and scope

Proposals should be your own, specific to sporting culture, and clearly different from material already planned or published. Choose a manageable question: one object, visual choice, custom or place can make a stronger piece than a broad account of an entire sport.

How to send a proposal

Send pitches through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Please include enough detail for us to understand the angle and intended reader. A pitch is a proposal, not a guarantee of publication; do not send confidential or sensitive material.

Our point of view

Sport is culture in visible form

A badge, a familiar call or a turnstile can tell a story that the score alone cannot. We look closely at these details and what they mean to people around a game.
